Aprons Away: Women’s Work on Route 66, the latest book from author Cheryl Eichar Jett, presents an interesting chapter in the Route 66 story that has been largely overlooked, even during the Route 66 centennial. The publisher, Reedy Press, provides a summary that piques the curiosity. “We’ve all heard of Route 66, but did you ever stop to think of all the women who worked along the 2,448-mile length of the most famous highway in the world? The welcoming smile from an aproned waitress offering to pour you a cup of coffee or the friendly face of the motel owner ready to rent you a room come to mind. But thousands more worked behind the scenes at a variety of jobs, businesses, careers, and artistic endeavors during the first century of Route 66. From Chicago to Los Angeles, in cities and small towns, women pumped gas, held elected offices, painted public art murals, joined the military, reported news, and designed buildings, theme parks, fashion, and toys. Just in time for this year’s 100th anniversary of the iconic Mother Road, author Cheryl Eichar Jett examines the myriad roles women played at the crossroads of Route 66 and women’s history.”

Jett has included Kingman as a stop on her nationwide book tour. On Saturday morning August 22, at 10:00, she will be signing books at Mr. D’z Route 66 Diner Gift Shop. The gift shop and auto museum is located in the historic Dunton Motors dealership facility located at 119 E Andy Devine Avenue (Route 66). The dealership that opened in 1946, and adjacent Mr. D’z Route 66 Diner, are tangible links to the Dunton family’s century of doing business along Route 66 in western Arizona. Author, humorist, and historian Jim Hinckley of the Jim Hinckley’s America network will be joining Jett to sign books and answer questions about Route 66, the narrated self guided Kingman Tours, and new Visit Kingman initiative.

August 20 – 22, 27 – 29 My Fair Lady at Beale Street Theater – Join Beale Street Theater as we perform one of the greatest musicals of all time. August 21 Movie at the Park – Bring your blankets, chairs and good vibes to enjoy an outdoor movie at Centennial Park. The big screen will show “Superman”. Concessions will be open. August 21 & 22 – America 250 Exhibit at Mohave Museum of History and Arts – Join the Mohave County Historical Society on Friday, August 21st and Saturday, August 22nd at the Mohave Museum of History & Arts as we celebrate the opening of our new America 250 Exhibit. This exhibit features student exhibits created by Manzanita Elementary School’s 2025-2026 5^th grade classes. We will have hands-on activities for the community, including our “Dear America” postcard project. Kids get in free. Locals 18+ free with ID. The Mohave Museum is open 9am-4pm on 8/21 and 8/22.
