CAMP NAVAJO, Ariz. – The Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs continues to manage the lightning‑caused Americana fire that began on August 11. Currently spanning approximately 95 acres, the fire is being managed by the Camp Navajo Fire Department, Forestry crews, and military firefighters from the Arizona National Guard. Because this portion of Camp Navajo has not experienced fire activity in about 75 years, officials view this controlled burn as a critical opportunity to clear significant amounts of dead and down vegetation. The fire will be used to naturally treat up to 200 acres of underbrush, reducing future wildfire risks. It is fully contained within the Camp Navajo road system and poses no threat to military or civilian infrastructure, personnel, or surrounding communities.

In addition, the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs is aware of two ongoing fires on Camp Navajo. These fires, ignited by lightning, are being monitored as managed burns designed to provide resource benefits.
