Bullhead City, AZ., August 17, 2022- The City of Bullhead City has announced Mackenzie Covert has been hired to the position of Public Information Officer (PIO). Covert has worked in the City’s Public Information Department managing the municipal television station, TV4, for 9 years. Covert will be the first person to hold the position of PIO since the former PIO, Steve Johnson, retired from the role in July of 2013. During the interim period, the duties were absorbed by the city managers office. In the most recent budget deliberations, City Manager Toby Cotter, asked the city council to provide funding once again for the PIO position. The position was funded by the City Council due to the rapid growth of the city, the need for increased communications from the utility department, marketing for the many recreational programs offered throughout the year, the need to promote the robust water conservation program, information sharing about other important city programs and services, and increased social media presence.

A life-long local, Covert graduated from River Valley High School in 2008, before getting a bachelor’s degree in Media Arts & Animation from the Art Institute of Phoenix. Covert worked for TV2KLBC in Laughlin Nevada as a Media Control Room Technician and on-air talent in 2011. In 2013, Covert also worked for PGXpress Graphics as a Graphic Designer before beginning his career as a public Servant for the City of Bullhead City.

Since Starting with the City, Covert has been instrumental behind the scenes in helping the city improve its communications strategy and implementation. Covert assisted with two website redesigns and upgraded the TV4 infrastructure to improve the quality of the city’s messaging. Covert implemented the City’s annual live stream of the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions, has overseen the live broadcast of every City Council and Commission Meeting since May 2013, has helped manage, maintain, and grow every City social media account, produced countless videos, and has assisted the city’s Public Information department in innumerable other ways.

“We posted the PIO position to the public and cast a wide net to attract the best applicants,” said City Manager Toby Cotter. “After a rigorous review process of multiple applicants, including a skills test and a panel interview with outside experts, it became clear the best applicant was right here.”

Covert’s official first day as Public Information Officer will be Monday, August 22nd. You can reach Covert at mcovert@bullheadcityaz.gov.
