The BLM is currently gathering burros in the Black Mountain Herd Management Area (BMHMA). This effort will assist with addressing heard health, impact to rangeland habitat and roadway safety concerns associated with herd overpopulation.
As of 5/8, we have gathered 267 of burros.
All burros are treated humanely, and we follow a very robust animal care protocol. Following their capture, the burros will be shipped to our Florence Wild Burro Horse and Burro Training Facility and Off-range Corral. They will be cared for here until their adoption or shipped to another location for private placement.
Wild burros have no natural predators which results in a rapid increase in population. If not appropriately managed, the herds can double in size every five years. This gather will help to maintain a thriving natural ecological balance in the BMHMA.
