Last Saturday (3/11), our search and rescuers participated in our ATV and UTV certification in the desert wilderness area just east of Lake Havasu City. This certification is required by searchers who plan to use one of these tools in the field during search and rescue missions. Some areas of Mohave County are so rugged and remote, that the use of an ATV or UTV can provide a more rapid response – particularly when life-saving measures may be required. While the class does not teach an operator how to use their vehicle, it does evaluate their skill level through various types of terrain with their handling knowledge of their vehicle. Training discussions also included wearing a proper helmet, correct hook up and trailer safety, and the vehicle specific tools/supplies that should be carried – including a spare belt, a tire plug kit, a spare tire, and tools to do any necessary repairs while in the wilderness area. Great job by everyone with these certifications!
