BULLHEAD CITY – The Colorado River Union High School District has scheduled a community forum to hear from the two finalists for CRUHSD superintendent. The question and answer session will be next Wednesday, May 26, in CRUHSD’s Anderson Auto Group Fieldhouse at 6:00 p.m. Governing board members selected former CRUHSD superintendent Monte Silk and current CRUHSD career and technical education director Gina Covert as the top two contenders from among five finalists earlier this month.

The forum will be moderated by local insurance agent and CPA Paul Bull, who has previously moderated other community and candidate forums. At Wednesday’s community forum, members of the public will be invited to submit questions, which Bull will screen for duplication. The public will also be able to leave written feedback for the board to review when it deliberates later that evening. The meet-and-greet will be convened as a special CRUHSD meeting.

The meeting will be livestreamed on YouTube and simulcast on CRUHSD- TV/Suddenlink Channel 13; the YouTube link will be available shortly. Covert and Silk are expected to have final interviews with the board Wednesday. The board could decide that night. River Valley High School principal Dorn Wilcox has served as interim superintendent since January.

Here is background about the two finalists, in alphabetical order:

Gina Covert has held faculty and administrative positions in both CRUHSD and the Bullhead City (Elementary) School District. She and her family moved to the area in 1998. She has been a high school English teacher, CTE instructor, guidance counselor and junior high school principal. Covert has 15 years of classroom experience from elementary to high school, and has previously served as a girls’ athletic director and a student disciplinary officer. She also oversaw individual educational programs (IEPs) for special education students at Bullhead City Junior High (now Middle) and Fox Creek Junior High Schools. She currently oversees the CTE programs at CRUHSD’s three high schools and represents CRUHSD in the Western Arizona Vocational Education Joint Technical Education District (WAVE JTED), a partnering CTE district for Mohave and La Paz Counties. She is completing her doctoral dissertation.

Monte Silk was CRUHSD Superintendent from 1998 until 2005 and was previously assistant superintendent at the Bullhead City School District starting in 1995. He retired last year as superintendent of the Sidney, Montana, Public Schools. He was with that district from 2017 until 2020. After leaving CRUHSD, Silk was the superintendent at Snowflake Unified School District in Arizona, Superintendent at Corvallis School District in Montana, where he served for five years, and interim superintendent of the Pine Creek School District in Montana. He has also owned an educational consulting business since 2013. Silk has held faculty and administrative positions in Iowa, Montana, Wyoming and Arizona, and has an educational specialist post- graduate degree.
