In an ongoing effort to cut back the caddisfly population in Bullhead City, the Bureau of Reclamation has approved a daytime low flow event for Tuesday, July 19. The Colorado River below Davis Dam will be at 0.5 generating units from 8:00a.m. to 3:00p.m.
This low flow event presents a perfect opportunity to clean up the riverbed. With that being said, the City of Bullhead City Parks Maintenance Division is doing just that and is inviting the community to help. Everyone utilizing the river should be aware of the low water on July 19.
“We have partnered with several organizations in the past to clean up the river,” said Dave Heath, Parks Superintendent for the City of Bullhead City. “It’s a lot of fun to get out there after we have two big holiday weekends behind us and work together with our park guests to see how much we can do to take care of our beloved river.” According to Heath, previous River Cleanups have had anywhere from 50 to 1000 people participate. Crews have unearthed everything from car keys to cell phones from the bottom of the river. “Definitely, sunglasses and flip flops are the most abundant,” Heath said.
The City extends the invitation to anyone interested in helping out to join them at this event. No registration is required, volunteers simply show up the morning of the event. Cleanup bases will be set up at the Rotary Park Launch Booth and the Community Park launch ramp dock by the Chamber of Commerce. Each location will be stocked with trash bags and cold water. “While these two areas of the river along the largest parks in the community are the main focus, everybody is encouraged to help clean up anywhere along the river, the City is also encouraging anyone is Laughlin, fort Mohave and Needles to take advantage of the low flows by cleaning shorelines, fixing docks or performing other maintenance.” stated Mr. Heath.
