BULLHEAD CITY – Classes are scheduled to resume Monday for students at Desert Valley School, 1066 Marina Blvd., following major work to repair multiple blockages in a sewer line on campus. Repairs included excavation, scoping the lines and using high pressure blasts to loosen items, replacement of old pipe containing sharp angles, and removal and reinstallation of tile. Maintenance personnel believe that the blockages were caused by improperly flushed materials, as well as tight angles in old pipes making normal flow difficult.

Desert Valley is more than 40 years old, and most of the problems were in pipes installed before the school’s first expansion. The school’s sewer lines are flushed for maintenance on a regular basis. Make-up classes for Desert Valley’s closure on February 7 will be held on Friday, February 25. Make-up classes for cancelled classes on February 9 and 10 will be announced shortly.

“This was a monumental team effort,” said Desert Valley principal Kennie Churchwell. “We want to thank our staff members, parents and students for understanding that emergencies are out of our control.” Churchwell also cited the assistance of four business and community partners, calling it “tremendous.” Calvin’s Septic Services and Daniell’s Septic Tank Pumping and Maintenance investigated the problems and helped clear the lines.

Maintenance personnel from ABM Industries, the Bullhead City School District’s facilities contractor, excavated a nine-foot-deep hole to remove and replace the bad pipe and joints, while taking extra care to delicately remove and restore floor tile in Desert Valley’s cafeteria/multi-purpose room. He also thanked the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Colorado River for accommodating students whose parents didn’t have care arrangements during school hours.

And Desert Valley’s informal staff beautification committee made sure that students will feel welcome when they return Monday. Desert Valley’s 500 students are in kindergarten through fourth grade.
