BULLHEAD CITY – After Bullhead City Vice-Mayor Kathy Bruck died last fall, members of the Order of the Eastern Star assured the Bullhead City School District (BCSD) that one of Bruck’s many community outreach passions would continue: special supplies for incoming Kindergarten students.

Bruck and her Eastern Star colleagues from Sunrise Chapter #60 had prepared hundreds of the supply bags over the years for Kindergarten registration, previously known as Kindergarten Round-Up.  This week, they delivered 150 bags with basic supplies for five year olds starting school: paper, pencils, erasers, crayons, kid-friendly rounded scissors, rulers and tissues.

“Thank you, Eastern Star, for continuing Kathy’s legacy,” said Jennifer Lott, BCSD’s director of educational services.  “This has been an amazing collaboration since its inception.   Our young students and their parents truly appreciate the effort.”

Bruck’s long-time partner, Pete Peterson, was part of the Kindergarten supply assembly line team at the Mohave Shrine Club, and delivered all 150 bags to BCSD.  Bags will be sent to the three BCSD schools with Kindergarten programs: Desert Valley, Diamondback and Sunrise.

Kindergarten registration will be Tuesday, May 10, and Wednesday, May 11, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at all three of those schools.  Parents should bring children to the school they will be attending.  Children must be five years old on or before August 31 of this year in order to be enrolled in Kindergarten.  Bilingual assistance will be available.

“It’s so much easier on children, parents and staff for new Kindergarten students to come on the days set aside for registration,” Lott added.  “Each school has special programs and information planned.  It’s always best not to wait until the last minute when school starts after summer break.”

Parents should bring a child’s birth certificate, childhood immunization records, proof of residency (such as utility or financial statements), ID and, if applicable, legal paperwork about custody or guardianship.
