Bullhead City, AZ – At approximately 11:18 am, this morning (March 18, 2020), the Bullhead City Fire Department responded to a commercial fire alarm at 2280 Highway 95. Arriving crews reported the fire alarm sounding and light smoke coming from the rooftop. After quickly confirming that all of the occupants had evacuated the structure crews gained access to the roof utilizing Ladder721. Additional members gained access to the kitchen area where an active fire was reported. Fortunately, this building is equipped with a fire sprinkler system that properly activated when the fire broke out, keeping the blaze contained with minimal damage.
There were no injuries reported during this incident. Upon investigation, the fire was identified as starting on the cooktop range, which activated the hood extinguishment system and one sprinkler head containing the damage to that immediate area.
Contrary to many movie portrayals, only sprinkler heads directly exposed to the heat activate. Having a fire sprinkler system can keep a fire from spreading and aid with extinguishment. Fire spreads quickly and can double in size every minute. Even small fires can cause significant damages to property and endanger those nearby.
