Fort Mojave Indian Days returns with 45th Anniversary Celebration

Area residents invited to attend weekend events.

Needles, CA — The Fort Mojave Indian Tribe is proud to return to its annual celebration of Fort Mojave Indian Days October 22-23, 2021, after holding a virtual event last year because of the coronavirus.

Paying tribute to the Tribe’s strength and resilience, the theme for this year’s event is “Mojave Strong – Our resilience overcomes any challenge.” which will be showcased during the annual Mojave Days parade to be held in Needles on Saturday, October 23rd.

The tribe’s culture and traditions will be at the forefront of the festivities, with a Spirit Run beginning at sunrise on Thursday, October 21st. The Spirit Run will originate at Avi Kwa Ame, or “Spirit Mountain,” source of the tribe’s beliefs and customs. Nearly 100 runners, ranging in age from 5 to 74 years will pass through traditional Mojave lands to
celebrate and fulfill the enduring spirit of the Mojave people.

Thursday’s events will also include the crowning of the 2021-2022 Fort Mojave Indian Tribal Royalty. Tribal young men and women aged 8-24 years are eligible to compete for the titles of Fort Mojave Brave, Little Miss Fort Mojave, Junior Miss Fort Mojave and Miss Fort Mojave.

The highlight of the week will be Saturday’s Fort Mojave Indian Days Parade in Needles, California, which begins at 10:00 a.m. The parade will start at ‘I’ and Front Street, going along Broadway and ending at Broadway and D Street. This year’s Grand Marshal is Anita Holmes, with her selection honoring her many contributions to the tribe. For more
information about the parade, contact Nichole Garcia at 760-629-4591.

Parade winners will be announced at noon, immediately following the Tribal Council’s Welcome and introduction of the 2021-2022 Fort Mojave Royalty. Entertainment will continue throughout the day, including the Women’s Bird Dancing and Men’s Bird Singing Group contests. All the events will be held in the Fort Mojave California Village Park at 500
Merriman Avenue.
