In the early evening hours of Friday (12/29), Mohave County Sheriff’s Office received a satellite crash activation from an Apple iPhone. The activation plotted in the remote area of Mohave Wash, south of Lake Havasu City. Attempts were made to make contact with someone on the phone, but it went straight to voicemail. Search and Rescue was mobilized and responded to the location provided by Apple. The Havasu Search and Rescue Unit responded to the area and began a route and location search. The first teams arrived on scene not finding anyone in the area, but they did locate a damaged iPhone. Searchers attempted to power it up, but the device was damaged enough that it could not be turned on. Further investigation revealed that this damaged iPhone is the source of the crash activation. It is speculated that the iPhone had become unsecure from its owner and had fallen out of the vehicle while in motion, causing the crash detection activation. Great job by everyone!
