High flying fun in Kingman on October 5 is just one reason to set your sights on this historic desert crossroads this next few weeks. One of the last operational B-17 Flying Fortress (“Sentimental Journey”) will be on display on the apron at the Kingman Airport and Industrial Park. This is a fitting tribute to the history of the airfield and the milestone grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony of the new Flying Fortress Parkway I-40 Interchange. Display of the Sentimental Journey is sponsored by The Aviation Heritage Center of Kingman.

The airport opened in 1942 as the Kingman Army Airfield. During the war it was one of the largest flexible gunnery schools in the United States. Standing next to the Kingman Airport Cafe the original control tower, one of the last in the country, stands in silent testimony to this chapter in WWII history.

Route 66 figures prominently in Kingman’s story and in the fun filled days ahead. On Sunday October 4 at 1:00, a reception will be held for the team of The Long Way Home at Mr. D’z Route 66 Diner Gift Shop located in the historic Dunton Motors facility on Andy Devine Avenue. Jay Redding of Mother Road Media and the Dunton family are coordinating the event. This official Route 66 Centennial program is an epic road trip described as “three friends, two old cars, and 1,990 miles.”

On the evening of October 15 at 7:00 P.M. the Route 66 focused fun moves to the historic Beale Street Theater. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Route 66, the theater will host a special screening of acclaimed producer John Paget’s new feature-length documentary, “Route 66: The Main Street of America.” The film is being screened at historic theaters along Route 66 to sold out crowds. Following the film there will be a live Q&A with filmmaker John Paget and featured participants from the film.

On August 23, 2026, Blake Brisbois ot the Long Way Home (www.thelongway.co) was the guest on Coffee With Jim, weekly podcast from Jim Hinckley’s America. On September 14 film producer was the guest on this podcast.
