BULLHEAD CITY, AZ – The mechanical failure of an insulator just before 8 a.m. Friday, December 9, resulted in 10,926 Mohave Electric Cooperative (MEC) members losing power for about an hour in Bullhead City, Fort Mohave and Mohave Valley.

“This is not a common occurrence,” said Jerry Hardy, MEC Manager of Engineering and Operations. “We were alerted that the insulator failed, so our crews responded quickly, made the repairs and reenergized the line.”

The dead-end insulator is used to separate the high voltage lines from the power pole. The insulator failed at 7:52 a.m. and power was restored at 9:08 a.m. The area affected was from the Colorado River East to Vanderslice Road and from the Bullhead Parkway on the north end of town, south to Willow Valley in Mohave Valley.

Outage restoration is important to Mohave Electric Cooperative and every effort is made to restore power as quickly and safely as possible. Please remember, there are many ways to report an outage. You can call our toll-free line at 1-844-632-2667, text “outage” to 55050 from a number linked to your MEC account or use our SmartHub® application on your mobile device to report the outage. With proper notification setup through SmartHub®, updates will come to you. You can also track outages on our website at: https://www.mohaveelectric.com/outage-center/.

Founded in 1946, Mohave Electric Cooperative is a not-for-profit utility providing reliable, cost-effective power to 36,700 members, 43,500 meters, with more than 1,555 miles of line spanning areas from Bullhead City to Topock on the west, Hualapai to Burro Creek to the south, and Nelson to the east.
