Johnson & Johnson Vaccine Arriving

County Will Not Open to 55 & Older for Time Being

Demand Great, Vaccine Scarce

MOHAVE COUNTY, AZ (March 3, 2021) –Mohave County Health Director Denise Burley announced that the newly approved one dose Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine will be joining the Moderna vaccine going into the arms of county residents.  Burley said, “We expect 1,700 doses of the Janssen vaccine to arrive next week.” Like the Moderna vaccine, the Janssen vaccine will be distributed to the county providers.  Allocations of the Janssen vaccine will be very limited for the next few weeks.”

Each vaccine can provide protection against serious illness from COVID-19. The Janssen vaccine provides up to 93% protection against hospitalizations from COVID-19. Although the one dose Janssen vaccine may be ideal for individuals who may have difficulty obtaining a second dose, some providers may offer the choice between Moderna and Janssen vaccine.

Mohave County will not be opening vaccinations to the 55 years and older population at this time. The State announced Monday that two of its state-run vaccination sites will now be open to anyone 55 years and older as the move begins to an age-based model of distributing the vaccine. Burley points out, “Mohave County recently expanded vaccine eligibility to include the 65 years and older and Educator/Childcare worker phases. Until we consistently receive large allocations from the State and ensure these individuals have an opportunity to receive their vaccines, we cannot transition to the 55 years and older group.”

To be clear, as of now, the county is only allowing shots for those in the 1A phase and the 1B phase that prioritizes Protective Services Occupations and those who are 65 Years & Older, and Educators/Child Care Workers. No others are eligible for shots at this time in the county.

Although the full report is not in, all 320 first dose and 180 second dose appointments were filled for today’s Mohave County Department of Health and Safeway Pharmacy vaccination event at the Anderson Auto Group Field House in Bullhead City.
