KINGMAN, AZ – The Kingman Area Literacy Program (KALP) is excited to announce the launch of its summer tutoring session aimed at enhancing the reading skills of children in 2nd to 6th grade. The summer session is set to begin in June 2024 and volunteers will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the lives of children by helping them improve their reading abilities and confidence.

Teaching or tutoring experience is not required as volunteers will receive training, resources, and support thanks to Cookie Barron, KALP’s new Small Group Tutoring Coordinator. Barron has a Master’s in Special Education and retired after 30 years teaching elementary and special education students. Using her knowledge and experience, she has designed a plan of study tutors can easily implement in groups of up to four children.

“The interactive lessons we’ll use will help get these kids excited to learn and use their reading skills,” said Barron. “As Dr. Suess said, ‘The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.’”

Each session will include exercises in reading fundamentals, reading comprehension, and writing. Groups will meet twice a week with their tutor during the months of June and July.

“We are very excited to start this new initiative as a way to address the long wait times for tutoring,” said Erin Roper, KALP’s Director. “As a 100% volunteer run organization that provides 100% free services, it can be challenging to keep up with the needs of our community.”

The Kingman Area Literacy Program is a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating illiteracy and improving the quality of life through the promotion of reading.
