Kingman Government Criminal Cyberattack Update
*Ongoing Forensic Investigation*
KINGMAN, Ariz. – At this time, the city is working toward finding whether or not any data has been compromised. More ongoing forensic investigation will determine and conclude if any information was compromised, at this time the city is hoping the next process moves quickly, however we do not have a timeline at this point. The city completed a preliminary review and did not locate any compromised confidential information. In an overabundance of caution, the city will perform a more systemic review to ensure that no confidential information was compromised. City leadership appreciates the patience and understanding of our internal team members and external customers as we understand this is a lengthy process.
The city is insured against this type of criminal cyberattack, and we are working closely with different agencies and an insurance provider to conduct the forensic investigation. At this time, the city is still working to discover the extent of the event. The city has a legal obligation to inform any customers or internal team members if their information has been damaged or exposed. The forensic investigation into the discovery of exposed data is a huge undertaking, as there is an immense amount of data to be analyzed.
Although certain emails may seem legitimate at first glance, it is more important than ever for people to be vigilant regarding emails they receive, because criminal cyberattacks can attack individuals, cities, and also large corporations. The city is still working on the investigation and we will keep updating residents as information becomes available.
The City of Kingman government operations are close to fully operational after the February cyberattack. The City of Kingman is categorizing this as a criminal cyberattack; the city never lost control of our network.
