Release #: 1

Felony Arrest for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Misconduct Involving a Weapon

Early this morning at approximately 3:35 a.m., Kingman Police officers arrested Filberto Silva IV, 28, of Yucaipa, California, on felony charges of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and Misconduct Involving a Weapon, as well as misdemeanor charges of Disorderly Conduct and Discharging a Weapon within City Limits. Officers responded to the 3200 block of E. Andy Devine Avenue after receiving a report that two males were walking in the area and that one of them had pointed an object, believed to be a firearm, at a person standing near his vehicle. The reporting party also noted that the subject may have fired the weapon.

The two males left the area and were located shortly thereafter by officers at a nearby business. Silva was found in possession of a firearm, which was seized. Although Silva resisted as officers attempted to take him into custody, he was ultimately arrested without further incident. During the investigation, officers determined that the second male, who had recently become acquainted with Silva, had been walking with him to a store when Silva became paranoid and began firing the firearm several times at a vehicle. No one was injured during the incident. Silva has been booked into the Mohave County Adult Detention Facility on the aforementioned charges.

KPD Warns of Increase in Kia and Hyundai Vehicle Thefts

The Kingman Police Department is warning residents about another rash of Kia and Hyundai vehicle thefts in the Kingman area. The thefts appear to be part of a nationwide trend sparked by social media videos and challenges that demonstrate methods for stealing certain Kia and Hyundai vehicles. Since the beginning of the year, KPD has investigated 80 vehicle thefts, with a majority involving key-operated Kia and Hyundai models manufactured between 2011 and 2022. The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office is experiencing a similar increase, and investigators suspect the involvement of the same group of suspects, believed to be teens and young adults.

In these thefts, the suspects typically break a window, damage or remove the steering column cover, and use a tool to manipulate the ignition to start the vehicle.

Protect Your Vehicle

Kia and Hyundai have issued security improvements for many affected vehicles, including free anti-theft software updates and steering-wheel locks. KPD encourages owners of potentially affected vehicles to:

• Contact a Kia or Hyundai dealership to determine if your vehicle is eligible for the free anti-theft software update.
• Use a physical steering-wheel lock or “Club” device, particularly if your vehicle has not received the security update.
• Contact the manufacturer to confirm whether your vehicle qualifies for available security measures or a free steering-wheel lock:
– Hyundai: 800-633-5151; or visit www.hyundaiantitheft.com
– Kia: 800-333-4542; or visit www.kia.com and navigate to Owners Portal > Anti-Theft.
• Always lock your vehicle, even when parked at home.
• Park in a well-lit area and utilize exterior lighting around your home when possible.
• Ensure that security cameras and exterior lighting are functioning correctly.
• Do not leave valuables in your vehicle, especially where they can be seen from outside.
• Remain aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity to the Kingman Police Department at 928-753-2191.

Residents are advised not to confront individuals suspected of criminal activity, as they may be armed. In the event of a crime in progress or an emergency, call 9-1-1.

For additional information or to report suspicious activity, please contact the Kingman Police Department at 928-753-2191.
