On Thursday (9/15), Detectives with the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office were requested to investigate an Officer Involved Shooting involving a Kingman Police Department (KPD) Officer that occurred in the 3600 block of Peterson Rd. Over the course of the investigation, Detectives learned that earlier in the day KPD Officers had received a phone call in reference to a subject with outstanding warrants for his arrest. Information as to the subjects name, location, and vehicle he was traveling in were provided. The subject, Marcus Adam Fuentes, 36 of Kingman, was found to have valid warrants for his arrest, one being a felony Probation Violation warrant out of Maricopa County.
At approximately 8:15 PM, KPD Officers located the described vehicle traveling in the described area. A traffic stop was initiated on the vehicle in the 3500 block of Western Ave. As the vehicle came to a stop, the front seat passenger, identified as Fuentes, immediately exited the vehicle and began running on foot. A foot pursuit ensued and as Fuentes was running, he was reportedly making furtive movements at his waistband and pockets. Officers continued pursuing Fuentes to the 3600 block of Peterson Rd. where they lost visual of him. Upon checking the area he was last seen in, Fuentes was found in the courtyard of a senior assisted living facility in the 3600 block of Peterson Rd. Fuentes was advised that he was under arrest and given several verbal commands by Officers. Fuentes, who had partially concealed himself behind a large pillar, reportedly advised Officers that he had a gun and was not going back to prison.
As Officers attempted to negotiate with Fuentes and after he threatened to have a gun, Fuentes reportedly made a furtive movement that led to one of the Officers firing his weapon. The Officer fired one round, striking Fuentes. Officers then approached Fuentes and began administering first aid while awaiting the arrival of medical personnel. A search of the immediate area revealed no weapons. Fuentes was treated on scene and transported to Kingman Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injury. The incident was recorded on body-worn cameras. The Officer who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave by the Kingman Police Department, which is standard practice. This investigation is ongoing.
