Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Kingman chapter inducts 30 new members

MOHAVE COUNTY – The Mohave Community College chapter of Alpha Chi Omega of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society hosted its induction ceremony Friday for new members virtually for Fall 2021.

The 30 new PTK members inducted are: Caryn Bargerhuff, Thomas Barton, Brittany Bean, Santana Brissette, Amberlynn Chang, Lexie Colombo, Arlene Craig, Michael Fleming, Janette Gamber, Tammy Gibbs, Sean Golez, Henry Gonzalez, Amie Hanenberger, Madysen Heckmann, Brandy Klemer, Rebecca Ligori, MaryEllen Meadows, Kellie Mizell, CJ Nelson, Mercedes Nielsen, Dawn Palfreyman, Samantha Parsons, Courtney Phillips, Kyra Pietrass, Macquenzie Powell, Tatum Rader, Hydie Romero, Logan Sealy, Donevan Shumway and Richard Urban.

Students are invited to join Phi Theta Kappa if they have achieved a 3.5 GPA and earned 12 credit hours.

MCC President Dr. Stacy Klippenstein, officially opened the ceremony by welcoming all of the new members and guests. He told new inductees that they are now part of a special group and to celebrate all of the hard work it took to reach this wonderful academic achievement.

Dr. Tramaine Rausaw, Vice President of Student & Community Engagement and Dean of the Kingman Campus, followed with some inspirational words.

“This is a testament to not only your academic abilities, but your drive, ambition, and determination,” he said.

Michelle Drwal, former chapter Vice President of Service, was the guest speaker and called the new inductees to strive for excellence and to really get involved with everything PTK has to offer. Drwal also mentioned how great it was to see all of the support for the event.

“It is always great to see friends and family rooting for their loved ones. I hope they continue cheering on these new members both in and out of the classroom as it is vitally important to applaud their accolades,” said John Hansen, PTK chapter advisor.

Advisors are John Hansen, Dr. John Kitts and Dr. Trever Holland. Officers include Stephanie Powell (President), Angel Soriano (Vice President of Leadership), Mandie Price (Vice President of Service) and Bonnie Benoit (Secretary).

Before the newly minted members took the official oath, an overview of the PTK symbol was explained.

“Across the slab you will observe a black band. It represents the three ideals which bind us together, and the cultural self-control which is the necessary foundation for true wisdom, aspiration and purity,” Dr. Kitts said.

After displaying a presentation of the names and information of the inductees, Dr. Holland closed the ceremony.

“I charge you to explore always for truth and to dedicate yourselves to the cultivation of the well-reasoned life, a prelude to service and honor,” he said.

The event is typically held on campus each semester. This was the third consecutive induction ceremony held virtually on Zoom due to the pandemic. But that didn’t stop all of the support for the new PTK inductees.

After the ceremony, Stephanie Powell, chapter President, invited some of the new members to grab their favorite beverage and stay on for some games in order to get to know each other a little better.

“I thought we could do something fun and informal after the ceremony. We gave out three gift cards to the winners of these games and everyone had a lot of fun tonight,” said Powell.

Phi Theta Kappa’s mission is to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students by providing an opportunity for leadership, service, and development.
