Newly Elected Tribal Council Members Sworn In At Ceremony Held June 12th
New council member Michael Jackson elected; Shan Lewis re-elected Vice Chairman.

Needles, CA, June 12, 2021—With their families by their sides, Shan Lewis and Michael Jackson swore their oaths of office to the Fort Mojave Tribal Council at a ceremony held during the regular Tribal Council meeting on June 12. The two council members were elected at the General Election held June 5. Lewis was also re-elected Tribal Council Vice Chairman.

Chairman Timothy Williams administered the oath of office to returning Tribal Council Vice Chairman Shan Lewis. Next, Chairman Williams administered the oath of office to newly elected councilor Michael Jackson. Following the swearing in, each Tribal Council member had an opportunity to share his or her thoughts about the election, the Council and the Tribe in general. All spoke to the gratitude they feel to the serve the Mojave people and the many changes the Tribe has experienced over the years and the growth still ahead.

Other Tribal Council members spoke to how they work as a team, at times with disagreement, but always with the best interests of the Tribe in mind. Though the coronavirus changed many aspects of the election season, the members of the Tribal Council expressed their eagerness to return to working toward solutions for the tribe and its membership and to continue the teamwork they have built over the years.

Mr. Lewis has been a tribal council member since 2003 and was elected Vice Chairman in 2004. He is a veteran of the United States Armed Forces where he served his country proudly in the United States Army. Upon completing his tour of duty, he returned to the Fort Mojave Tribe where he worked for the Education and Public Relations departments before being elected to the council.

Newly elected council member Michael Jackson is an employee of the tribe’s Landscaping department, a position he has held since 2016. Mr. Jackson has been married to his wife, Shannon, for 14 years and the couple share 3 children and lots of nieces and nephews. The Vice Chairman and newly-elected councilor will join Chairman Timothy Williams, Council Secretary Colleen Garcia, and fellow council members Nichole Garcia, Johnny Ray Hemmers and Cellina Reyes on the Fort Mojave Tribal Council. The new council members were elected to two separate four-year terms. Boxed, to-go breakfasts were served following the swearing-in ceremony.
