Shortly after noon today, a vegetation fire was reported in the area near Mesquite Bay Fishing Pier (just north of Palo Verde N).  The strong winds quickly drove a surface fire to the south along the water’s edge, producing heavy smoke in the area.  The fire department established structure protection in the Quail Ridge development and allowed the fire to progress with the wind.  Smoke conditions also caused concerns in the Sailing Hawks development, but the area was protected by London Bridge Road.  Units monitored the fire along the road and allowed it to progress.

Initial mutual aid was received by Desert Hills Fire District and Buckskin Fire Department.  Off duty personnel were recalled to staff reserve apparatus for the remainder of the city.

Federal fire resources were ordered from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Bureau of Land Management to assist as well.

The fire department is now monitoring the area, while the federal wildland units evaluate the remaining hot spots.  The total area is currently estimated to be about 20 acres of area burned.

No injuries have been reported and no damage has been reported.

The area will be monitored over the next few days based on the recommendation of the federal units and residents should not be alarmed by smoldering or light smoke.

Call the on duty Battalion Chief at (928) 486-3507 or Terrie Haas, Fire Administration, at (928) 854-0758 for further information.
