ROTARIANS GIVE BCSD THIRD GRADERS ANNUAL GIFT OF DICTIONARIES

BULLHEAD CITY – Bullhead City’s Rotary Club continued an annual tradition of presenting new dictionaries for every third-grade student in the Bullhead City School District. More than 230 copies of Webster’s Sixth Edition Dictionary for Students were hand-delivered by Rotarians to Desert Valley, Diamondback and Sunrise Elementary Schools. Rotarians across the region and the country partner with The Dictionary Project, a non-profit charitable organization that provides dictionaries for students – primarily third-graders – to
use as their own personal reference books.

The project “believes that a dictionary is an essential tool for a quality education and that a student cannot do his or her best work without one.” Since its founding in 1995, tens of millions of children, mostly in the U.S., have received new dictionaries to use in school and then keep for life.

“We have this great technology but we can’t forget the basic foundation skills that can be applied to education and life activities,” said Godwin. “A dictionary isn’t just a dictionary.”
Killeen is relatively new to the Bullhead City Rotary Club but not the dictionary project. She is a past president of another Rotary chapter and has been involved in the dictionary program for 16 years.
