Route 66: The Main Street of America. That was one of the first marketing campaigns launched by the U.S. Highway 66 Association that was established in early 1927. The slogan still works. Route 66 has become America’s longest small town and that storied old highway is the Main Street from Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California.
Kingman figures prominently in the Route 66 story. The 1932 U.S. Highway 66 Association convention was held in Kingman. And along with Flagstaff and Winona, Kingman is one of the Arizona towns immortalized in a catchy little tune about getting your kicks on Route 66. It was in Kingman during the 2014 International Route 66 Festival that the annual Route 66 Miles of Possibility Conference was launched. Also at this event that a European Route 66 festival was first discussed.
From its inception Route 66 was sold as the road of dreams. For legions of international enthusiasts it still is, and the old highway may be more popular than at any time in its history. Recently Markku Jaakkola, a Finnish Mopar enthusiast from Royal Oak, Michigan, and Jacob Gilbert of Port Huron, Michigan made a pit stop in Kingman during their Route 66 adventure. The Route 66 Centennial Legacy Tour in a 1973 Chrysler New Yorker honored Markku’s late friend Hans Granberg. It was designated an offical Route 66 centennial program. Part of their trip including the Kingman pit stop was chronicled by Brandon Gillogly in an article for Hagerty Insurance.
“Stopping for lunch in Kingman, Arizona, we were joined by author, podcaster, and historian Jim Hinckley. Jim is a treasure trove of Route 66 knowledge that spans the length of the Mother Road and its history, even before its construction. He lives in Kingman and is well-versed in the local history there, as well..” After lunch at Calico’s restaurant a walking tour of the historic disrict was provided.
Jaakola and Gilbert had previously been a guest on Coffee With Jim, the weekly podcast from Jim Hinckley’s America, and discussed their upcoming Route 66 trip. And on the program of August 9, they returned to the program after finisihing their journey to the end of Route 66. That episode also featured a conversation with author Cheryl Eichar Jett about her new book, Aprons Away, and an upcoming book singing in Kingman.
Cheryl Eichar Jett is the author of seven books (three collaborations, four solo books). She also wrote the Illinois Chapter for Route 66: 100 Years a Route 66, centennial anthology edited by author Jim Hinckley. She has also written several hundred feature articles for various publications and is the founder of the annual Route 66 Miles of Possibility Conference.
On Saturday, August 22 at 10:00 Jett will be signing copies of Aprons Away at Mr. D’z Route 66 Diner Gift Shop in the historic Dunton Mootors dealership building, 119 E Andy Devine Avenue in Kingman, Arizona. Author Jim Hinckley will also be signing books as well as answering questions about Route 66.
