The legacy of GMC trucks is built into every new model. GMC trucks have been a symbol of strength, reliability, and innovation on American roads for over a century. And if the latest generation of GMC trucks sold at Findlay GMC in Bullhead City, Arizona are any indication, a new chapter in that legacy is being written.

The story of GMC trucks is a tale of vision, resilience, team building, and technological advancement that has shaped the automotive industry. But there is more to the GMC truck story than innovation and a reputation for durablity. It is the story of America in the industrial age.

The origins of GMC trucks can be traced back to the first years of the 20th century. Max and Morris Grabowsky had a knowledge of what teamsters needed, and a vision for what the futre might hold. And so they formed the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in Detroit with a goal of creating a vehicle that could handle the demanding tasks of hauling and transportation.

In 1902, they sold their first truck. According to automotive legend, this was the first gasoline-powered commercial vehicle on the streets of Detroit.

William Durant, co-owner of the Durant Dort Carriage Company, was also a visonary. Shortly after purchasing the Buick Motor Company, he leveraged that company to establish General Motors. Durant then began acquiring companies that were folded into GM. Some of his early acquisitions included Cadillac, Brush and the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company purchased in 1909.

He also purchased the Reliance Motor Car Company that had been building trucks with a growing reputation for durablity. Durant merged Rapid Motor Vehicle Company with Reliance Motor Car Company to form the General Motors Truck Company. It was the dawning of an American legend.

From that date forward GMC trucks have played roles in many significant historic events. During both world wars the company built rugged military vehicles. In World War I, GMC supplied over 8,500 vehicles to the U.S. Army, including troop carriers, aviation support vehicles, and ambulances.

But the durablity of GMC trucks was also being proven to the civilian market. In 1916 a 1.5-ton GMC truck became the first to cross the country in under 32 days. Ths record breaking drive was a headline grabbing  testament to the reliability of GMC trucks.

From its inception GMC has been at the forefront of many innovations in the truck industry. As an example, in 1936, the “T-14” series was introudced. This was the first American pickup truck that featured an all-steel cab for enhanced safety and durability. During this same period GMC began developing and testing disel engines in trucks. In 1939 the company offered buyers the first mass-produced diesel-powered truck.

In more recent years, GMC has continued to innovate with features like the CarbonPro carbon fiber composite pickup bed, offering unprecedented dent, scratch, and corrosion resistance. The introduction of Super Cruise technology has the potential to provide drivers with a true hands-free driving experience on compatible highways.

As we look to the future, GMC shows no signs of slowing down. With the advent of electric vehicles, GMC is leading the charge with the development of the GMC HUMMER EV pickup and SUV. These trucks reflect the company’s legacy of commitment to sustainability and performance.

But there is more to the GMC story than trucks. GMC is also the story of innovators, of visionaries, and laborers. From the engineers and designers to the assembly line workers and customers, each person has played a part in building the reputation of GMC trucks as an enduring symbol of American ingenuity and craftsmanship.

When you see a GMC truck on the highway, yo are seeing a link to a rich history and a bright future for this iconic brand. It’s a legacy built on a century of innovation, and it’s one that continues to evolve with every mile traveled.
