BULLHEAD CITY, Ariz. – Mohave Electric Cooperative members who purchased Operation Cool Shade trees are reminded to leave Saturday morning’s schedule open.

Pickup is 7 a.m.-noon, Saturday, at the Justice Complex parking lot across from the Public Works Department on Alona’s Way.

“It’s the only time to pick up the trees,” said Steve Bouman, energy management specialist at MEC.

Members need to bring the receipt received following the purchase. If it has been misplaced or lost, MEC has a master list of all orders, but this slows the process.

The purpose of the program is to help members reduce energy consumption, particularly during the summer months.

“Air conditioners can run almost continuously when the sun is beating on a house in the summer,” Bouman said. “Well placed shade trees, as they reach maturity, can cut cooling costs up to 20 percent.”

The four types of trees available this year were Chilean mesquite, desert willow, rosewood, and willow acacia.

Members who purchased trees are reminded to consider the best locations to plant. The most efficient plan will consider shade on the roof as well as the east, west, and south walls.

“But,” Bouman warns, “be careful not to plant too close to power lines. The tree, at maturity, should remain at least 15 feet from overhead lines.”

It’s also important to call Arizona811 by dialing 811 or visit prior to digging. Utility locators will be notified and the location of underground utilities will be marked.

“Also consider the distance from driveways, patios, sidewalks, and block walls,” Bouman said. “Trees and their roots will grow, so plant effectively and wisely.”
