In 2022, the commercial casino industry in the United States achieved its most successful year to date, winning over $60 billion from gamblers. The American Gaming Association, the national trade group for the gambling industry, disclosed figures on Wednesday, indicating that traditional, in-person gambling accounted for more than 80% of the industry’s revenue, while online betting contributed nearly a fifth. It is worth noting that these figures exclude the revenue generated by tribal casinos, which report their earnings separately.

According to Bill Miller, the association’s president and CEO, the industry exceeded expectations in 2022. Miller attributed this to the increasing numbers of American adults choosing casino gaming for entertainment, which is benefiting communities and taking market share from the predatory, illegal gambling market. The $60.4 billion won by commercial casinos in 2022 represents a rise of almost 14% compared to the previous year.

The top-performing gambling markets in the US remained the Las Vegas Strip and Atlantic City, but the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., Chicago, and Mississippi Gulf coast markets also saw notable growth. In the past year, 84 million American adults, equivalent to 34% of the adult population, visited a casino, including new markets in Nebraska and Virginia.

Table games revenue increased by 13.9%, while slot machines generated 5.1% more revenue. Sports betting also continued to grow rapidly, setting new records for the total amount wagered ($93.2 billion) and sportsbook revenue ($7.5 billion). This growth was partly due to the introduction of retail and mobile sports wagering in Kansas and the launch of mobile sports betting in Louisiana, Maryland, and New York.

Online casino revenue also grew significantly, increasing by 35.2% to $5 billion in 2022.
