VFW – Promoting Patriotism and Investing in Our Future Generation

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in our future generation. 

If you are a democracy-loving high school student interested in a $30,000 college scholarship or a patriotic middle school student interested in winning $5,000, these scholarships may be for you.

Youth Scholarships

Our youth scholarships challenge students to reflect on our nation’s history, their ideals and principles, and their own experiences based on a patriotic theme.  Please contact for the following entry forms:
1. Get Excited for the Red, White and Blue! A national anthem singing contest for youth ages six to16 Form; Illustrating America!  One winner in each of the 10 National Auxiliary Program Divisions will receive a $100 Visa gift card, the national winner will receive an additional $1,000 Visa gift card.
2. An art contest for students in grades 1-8; YOUNG AMERICAN Creative PATRIOTIC ART CONTEST Form. The first-place winner from each state competes for national awards totaling $31,500.
3. The Voice of Democracy “Is This the Country the Founders Envisioned?” Patriotic Audio Essay Competition Form. The national first place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. A complete list of other national scholarships range from $1,000-$16,000, and the first place winner from each VFW Department (state) wins a minimum scholarship of $1,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

Scout of the Year

Each year the VFW honors three young people – from Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Sea Scouts or Venturing Crew – who have demonstrated exceptional citizenship in school, scouting and the community. The first place winner receives $5,000. Please complete the SCOUT OF THE YEAR PROGRAM Form.

Teacher of the Year

Each year the VFW recognizes three exceptional teachers – one each from the elementary, junior high and high school levels – for their outstanding commitment to teach Americanism and instill patriotism in their students. Complete the VFW Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Entry Form to win $1,000 award for the top K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 grade teachers for professional development expenses . $1,000 award for each winning teacher’s school.  Plaques for both the winning teacher and school.  An all-expenses-paid trip to attend the VFW National Convention.
