The Bullhead City School District is cancelling classes on Tuesday, September 6, due to after-effects from Sunday night’s fierce storm.  While initial campus damage reports are primarily things such as downed trees and torn awnings, most cafeteria refrigerators and freezers were without power for extended periods of time.

Perishable food for student meals is being replaced according to Chartwells, BCSD’s food service vendor.  Additionally, the activation of Sunrise Elementary School as a community emergency shelter and cooling station requires cleaning and sanitation before classes resume.  Full damage assessments of all six campuses and other District buildings will continue Tuesday after all power is restored and all interior areas are visible.

Classes are expected to resume Wednesday.

“This is not a decision we’ve made lightly,” said Superintendent Carolyn Stewart.  “But it’s the right decision for our students and our staff.”

BCSD will announce a makeup day for students and staff.  It is expected to be on a future Friday.  No date has been selected, but as much advance notice as possible will be provided.

Stewart thanked crews from Mohave Electric Co-op and area first responders who worked around the clock to restore power and keep the community safe. She said the District was honored to work with Bullhead City when an emergency shelter was needed. The City and BCSD share an emergency backup generator at Sunrise. The City received a post-9/11 federal security grant for the generator, and the Sunrise campus was selected for its location.
