City of Kingman Implements Telematics System to Enhance Solid Waste Fleet Safety and Efficiency
Kingman, AZ – The Kingman City Council has approved the acquisition of a new telematics management system for the City’s Solid Waste Division to improve fleet safety, efficiency, and operational oversight. This initiative involves a three-year contract with Routeware Inc. The city has procured GPS vehicle tracking and camera systems for ten refuse trucks, which comprise half of its fleet, to evaluate the system’s effectiveness before considering a full-scale deployment.
The Routeware management solution encompasses hardware, software, and data tracking capabilities, enabling the city to monitor vehicle performance, optimize routes, and verify incidents in real-time. The integration of forward-facing cameras will offer crucial footage for assessing accidents. “This investment is about making our operations more efficient and prioritizing safety,” said Rob Owen, the City’s Public Works Director. “The ability to review footage after an accident will help us understand what happened and find ways to better protect both our drivers and residents.”
The contract with Routeware Inc. has been facilitated through the City of Tucson’s cooperative purchasing agreement. This acquisition was endorsed in the Fiscal Year 2024-25 Adopted Budget and is part of the City’s 5-Year Capital Improvement Plan. The cost for the first year’s contract amounts to $30,979.60 plus tax, with the second and third years each costing $20,979.60 plus tax, funded via the Solid Waste Fund.
