Kingman Police Department Awarded Grant Funds from Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety
The Kingman Police Department is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a $31,436.00 grant for a selective traffic enforcement program (STEP) and a $50,000 grant from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for DUI/Impaired Driving Enforcement.
The goals of the STEP program are to reduce incidences of traffic fatalities and injuries resulting from speeding, aggressive driving, red light running and other forms of risky driving behavior. There are high costs of speeding in terms of financial, criminal and human consequences. $25,000 of the funds will be used to pay for officer’s overtime costs for enhanced targeted STEP/speed enforcement activities and the remaining $6,436 will be used for materials and supplies to purchase a traffic data recorder and LIDARS. This funding will enhance the Kingman Police Department’s ability to conduct additional targeted aggressive traffic enforcement throughout the City of Kingman.
The $50,000 in grant funds will be used to pay for officer’s overtime costs for enhanced targeted DUI and impaired driving enforcement throughout the City of Kingman beginning October 2026 through September 2027. The goal of the Impaired Driving Program is to reduce alcohol and drug related driving fatalities and injuries through enforcement, education, and public awareness throughout the State of Arizona.
The Kingman Police Department is an active participant of the Western Arizona DUI Task Force, which includes the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office, Arizona Department of Public Safety, Bullhead City Police Department and Lake Havasu City Police Department. In coordination with the Western Arizona DUI Task Force, the department will conduct saturation patrols throughout the year with an emphasis on holidays and specific event days when incidents of impaired driving are higher.
Impaired driving is recognized as a violent crime with significant consequences in Arizona. Impaired drivers arrested for DUI drugs or DUI alcohol will go to jail and their vehicle will be impounded. The average cost of a DUI offense is approximately $10,000 in fines, court fees, vehicle impound, insurance rates, etc. These economic costs do not factor in other, more personal costs such as the potential loss of life or your job.
The Kingman Police Department urges you to plan ahead for a sober ride home in advance if you plan to use an impairing substance or will be drinking alcoholic beverages. Before you ever get behind the wheel of a vehicle, remember: “If You Feel Different, You Drive Different and Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over!”
