LAKE HAVASU CITY, MOHAVE COUNTY – Lake Havasu City, in collaboration with Mohave Community College (MCC), have launched the Supervisor Excellence Academy aimed at enhancing the skills of the city’s supervisory staff. The project reinforces Lake Havasu City’s ongoing commitment to invest in employee talent and increase the quality of services offered to the community.
The academy is a brainchild of Lake Havasu City Manager, Jess Knudson, and Director of Human Resources, Bobbie Kimelton. Following its launch in February 2024, the inaugural cohort had over 20 graduates, all of whom were internal candidates.
“We realized that many of our supervisors were promoted into leadership roles based on their technical expertise and prowess in their respective fields, but had received no formal training in leadership or supervision,” said Bobbie Kimelton, Human Resources Director at Lake Havasu City.
The Supervisor Excellence Academy is being facilitated by MCC’s Corporate Education & Workforce Training Department, offering custom classes covering a range of topics. These include budgeting and finance, procurement, project management, strategic management, leadership and supervision, among others.
“The consonance between MCC’s and Lake Havasu City’s goals regarding improving workforce skills and promoting local economic development has helped us build a robust corporate education program,” said Gina Kremper, Associate Dean of Corporate Education and Business Development at MCC.
Significantly, all participants of the Supervisor Excellence Academy are enrolled as MCC students, allowing them access to the college’s student support resources, including student success coaches, advisors, tutoring and other services. Once participants have completed the program, they will receive a certificate and earn 12-15 credit hours that they can use to further their education.
Infrastructure Supervisor at Havasu’s IT Department and inaugural graduate, Melissa Dyer, hailed the academy for its immense value, stating, “I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking to advance or to any new supervisor. It’s an excellent introduction to tools and resources available.”

Classes can be provided in the Kingman, Lake Havasu City, Bullhead City, or North Mohave areas. Availability of full or partial funding for course fees through ARIZONA@WORK’s grant-funded programs is also in place.
