Kingman, AZ – 5/1/23 — Changes made to the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona’s annual Route 66 Fun on the weekend of May 5th will introduce the world to an innovative project that brings Kingman’s history to life. Nikki Seegers, director of operations for the association noted in a recent press release that “A spectator viewing area with seating in the shade will be set up in front of the Railroad Depot.”
The annual Route 66 Fun attracts participants from throughout the United States and Canada. Companies such as New Zealand based Gilligan’s Route 66 Tours include the Fun Run in their spring tour package.
During National Road Trip Day festivities in 2022, Kingman Main Street introduced their latest project, a self-guided historic district walking tour narrated by acclaimed author, historian and humorist Jim Hinckley, creator of the Jim Hinckley’s America network. The starting point for the tour is at Depot Plaza along Route 66 at the historic depot.
The tour developed by MyMarketing Designs utilizes QR codes on informative kiosks that link to the website – https://kingman.tours. Each point of interest has its own page that contains historic photos, audio narration by Hinckley, a map, and a 360-degree photo which makes this a virtual as well as physical tour.
The points of interest kiosks have been placed at historic sites, filming locations for movies filmed in Kingman, sites associated with celebrities such as Pamela Anderson, Buster Keaton, Charles Lindbergh, and Clark Gable, and public art. Kiosks at displays of public art provide biographies of the artists including J. Anne Butler, a sculptress that has created work under commission to the Queen of England, and Donald Gialanella.
In several communities the tour project has been evaluated as a template to be used as a component in historic district revitalization projects. MyMarketing Designs has offered their services to assist with implementation.
