On Wednesday (3/22) and Friday (3/24), the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue short-haul team conducted their 90-day recurrency with Kingman DPS Ranger. Recurrency generally consists of performing two rappels (at 100 ft and 150 ft); two short-hauls (the rescuer carrying a subject from one location to another location by a 150 ft rope hanging below the helicopter); and, random skills – such as a hovering ingress/egress (where the helicopter hovers about 1 to 2 feet above ground while rescuers enter and exit the helicopter), one-skid landing (where only one skid of the helicopter makes contact with the ground), or a toe-in landing (where the toe/tip of the skid makes contact with the ground). There are three methods our short-haul teams use: toe-to-toe or man-to-man (where the rescuer and the subject are facing each other and strapped in using full body harnesses); the use of a screamer suit (used for rapid extrication without using a full body harness); or, the use of a bauman bag (a bag used to extricate a subject on a backboard, a stokes litter, or by itself). Our teams are constantly training, as these skills are perishable. Great job by everyone!
